Keeping Yourself Safe After A Fire
4/25/2022 (Permalink)
When a fire occurs in your home or business the effects can be traumatic. Even though the fire has been put out there are other dangers that can show up afterward. It is important, when entering a home or business after a fire, to take specific actions to minimize hazards to your health even after the flames are gone.
A major concern after a fire has been put out is air quality. It is likely that many different materials caught fire and many have released toxic chemicals into the air. Without proper respiratory protection, you could breathe these chemicals in and they may cause lingering health problems. Always remember to wear proper respiratory protection any time you enter a fire-damaged space.
When entering your home or business after a fire makes sure you are properly dressed. A big concern has to do with "slip and fall" hazards. A fire can create a lot of debris and if you don’t wear proper clothes and shoes you may find yourself slipping and falling causing avoidable injury. If you must go into the structure avoid areas that may be wet from the water that was sprayed to put out the blaze.
Here are a few other things you can do for your home or business after a fire:
- To prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets, keep hands clean. This will help you keep from further soiling upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
- Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
- Clean and protect chrome with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
- Change the HVAC filter. Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.
Most of all, always remember that the contents of your home or business can be replaced. Don’t take unnecessary risks and take care of your health and the health of your loved ones. Getting hurt after a fire is something that can be avoided!
